On a Mission with eDiscovery — The Series

By Brittany Thaler, ACP eDiscovery

When it comes to discovery and disclosure, there are always pain points. These pain points can be either physical or mental. For example, you could get pain in your wrist from drawing redactions or struggle to figure out the best way to review 50,000 records.

As a paralegal myself, these are just some of the many reasons I was always searching for ways to improve efficiency.  My guess is, you are too.

Our Getting Started Series can be helpful for overall understanding and our Administrator Training provides extensive in-depth knowledge, but it may not always be the right option for you the given budget, time, or task at hand.

Getting Help Wherever You are on your eDiscovery Mission

This is why the Learning Center also hosts the On a Mission series, providing bite-sized videos for accomplishing a specific task or workflow.  These bite-sized tutorials are perfect for those times when you simply need a little extra help.

These On a Mission courses offer a variety of learning content, such as Creating & Managing Key Words, Bulk Tagging, Deeper Drive into Review Functionality , and so much more.

Let’s set the scene: You are a paralegal; you review and administrate.  You work in discovery ][ Local regularly with small to medium sized cases. Today, a large production lands in your inbox.

You didn’t expect it–and you didn’t realize they would produce SO MUCH, let alone have a game plan to approach a review of this magnitude. After you panic, you take a deep breath in and exhale.  You know you have this and can get it done, because you have IPRO’s Learning Center bookmarked!

Streamlining

For the task at hand, you choose to start with Creating & Managing Key Words. This isn’t a feature you normally use. When reviewing, it isn’t common for you to have Hot Terms or Key Terms that need to be highlighted (really catch your eye) when conducting a review.

But with a large review like this, missing those Key Terms in emails is more likely, and having a helping hand can increase the quality of your review. Furthermore, using this feature can aide in easily identifying when a document is either potentially responsive or privileged, making your review more streamlined.

Next you move onto Bulk Tagging. With records in the small thousands, bulk tagging in Utilities may be not necessary; you can easily group select and tag in bulk from within Review.  When working with large quantities of documents, it may be more advantageous to tag documents by the range in bulk.

An example of this could be: BegDoc Range ABC_000000124 through ABC_000008424, which should be tagged Defendant’s 1st Supplemental Disclosure Statement and For Review by Expert Thomas, while records ABC_000000124 through ABC_000764124, need to be tagged Defendant’s 1st Supplemental Disclosure Statement.

When your list continues on, and in big chunks, it can be quicker to tag by ranges from within Utilities instead of searches within Review.

Discovering New Best Practices

Last, you know you don’t know what you don’t know.  You are sure there are workflows in discovery ][ Local that work more efficiently and effectively for large cases, but you just don’t use them and never really paid attention to the features.

That is why your last stop is Deeper Drive into Review Functionality. Sure, you may know how to merge and split records, but before now, you didn’t know about the Global Replace feature, or how using the Tally feature may assist in gaining a perspective of, and analyzing, the records in your database.

Taking only about 13 minutes, and at no-cost (yes, you read that correctly, these are free), you have accomplished your mission: to quickly and easily learn new skills, allowing you to efficiently and effectively navigate your review.

Happy Learning!
